all you need to know about league snooker in Grimsby
Thursday Intermediate report by Euan Hunter.
In the last regular week of the RCS Landscapes Intermediate Snooker league season it was all to play for at the top with one point separating three teams. Lying in third before the nights events Locate Supplies faced what was on paper the easier fixture when entertaining relegated Clee Cons A at Clee Bowls. However after a long hard season Locate could not quite pull it together and with Cons putting up a great performance the match ended all square with Locate realistically out of the race. With Simon Devaney Builders & Cue World neck and neck both teams needed to ensure that they piled on the frames to try and out do one and another. Andy Rouse & Stuart Carrington won the first frame for the Builders against Birds Eye before they doubled their advantage. Ashley Wright & Luke Maddison kept their composure and won 2-0 as well as a big win was on the cards. Frame five was closer with Mick Boyington & John Tomlinson putting up a fight but they could not prevent their opponents winning and in the final frame of the night Craig Rowbotham & Danny Harrison easily piled on the points as the Builders achieved a slam. Cue World would have to match this at their match with Icing Cabin to take the title into a decider. Butch Reynolds & Jack Stinson made it 2-0 to Cue World before Bob Reeves & Ivan Harvey scraped the next to make it 3-0. They won the next more comfortably but watched in agony as Daz Barraclough & Danny Reynolds nearly lost the next. However they pulled through and when they won the final frame of the night they had matched the Builders and set up a decider for the title. Elsewhere Euan Hunter & Cliff Goldsack won the first frame for Grimsby Cons at Bryants Carpets before Paul Clark, with runs of 56 & 31, took the next. Jamie Green, Danny Rock, Paul Smith & Daz Potter then won the remaining frames for a 5-1 win.
In Section B Carr Lane Social A needed two frames against Webbonet Website Design and Hainton to fall to an unlikely defeat to take the title. Webbonet themselves if they beat Carr Lane heavily could also sneak the title. Bryan Riley & Art Young were in great form for Carr Lane as they easily won 2-0 to put Carr Lane in a great position. Meanwhile at the Hainton Club Richard & Paul Claridge & Robbie & Richard Bell put RCS Landscapes into an incredible 4-0 lead blowing open the title and promotion race. Keith & Adam Board converted the 4-0 lead into a slam leaving Carr Lane with the title. Webbonet could still take second spot off Hainton and with Gordon Dawson, Mick Forster, Brian Hotson & Ken Payne completing a brilliant fight back to beat Carr Lane this is what they did. West End beat Stamford B 5-1 with Martin Shaw, Andrew Warner, Alan Porritt & Pete Leather winning 2-0. Seeking three consecutive wins Grimsby Police B were outdone by Cambridge F with Paul Spall & Dave Robinson winning 2-0 in a 4-2 win. Express Appliances & Westlands C won 4-2 against West End D & Crazy Potters respectively and the matches between Clee Cons C & Westlands D and Clee Bowls N & Carr Lane Social B ended up all square.
